The Silver Building is a bustling workspace and cultural centre in Silvertown that is home to scores of creative businesses. It provides affordable workspace for everyone from large-scale set designers to ateliers, photographers and traditional artists. It is a place where creative enterprises, SMEs, start-ups and existing Newham-based businesses are flourishing, and where new talent is being nurtured and grown. The Silver Building is located on Dock Road and is a stone's throw from West Silvertown Station on the DLR. In autumn 2019 transport connectivity will be boosted further when Crossrail opens at Custom House.
Working in partnership with the Mayor of London's office and Silvertown Homes Ltd, The Silver Building is the latest venture from Nick Hartwright, a leading social entrepreneur who delivers mixed-use affordable space for businesses, artists, designers and creative SMEs in London. The Silver Building has received significant financial support from the Mayor of London's Good Growth Fund, as well as funds from the private sector.
As well as providing 34 functional, pared-back studios of varying sizes for creative enterprises, The Silver Building features a number of communal areas and hospitality options across its four floors. The open and accessible ground floor café and bar is the beating heart of the development. Tenants at The Silver Building include esteemed British menswear designer Craig Green, radical set design company Block9, and Rhonda Drakeford – founder of bold interior design shop 'Darkroom'.
The Silver Building is a temporary site that could stand for as long as eight years, but tenants will not be displaced when the final development, built by Silvertown Homes Ltd, is erected. Nick Hartwright and his team are working closely with the proprietors who are wholly committed to re-provision with no net loss of employment space. All stakeholders for the final scheme are treating The Silver Building as a 'development and discovery period' to inform what comes next. The Silver Building is not just about space. It is also about social wealth, growth and business opportunities.
